Special Education

The Alisal Union School District serves the Special Education needs of students from birth through sixth grade. There are two basic Special Education services at each school site. These services include Resource Specialist and Speech and Language programs. The Resource Specialist services are typically pullout services for academic support for up to one-half of the student's day. These students remain in their regular classroom for the rest of the day. Each Resource Specialist has a maximum caseload of 28 students. Speech and Language services are typically given twice a week for thirty minutes. The maximum caseload for Speech and Language in a primary setting is fifty-five students. If more students are identified above the maximum in either program, additional services are added to meet the needs of these students. The District Special Day classes are located at various sites within the District, but are not located at every site. The District also has Special Day Classes for students who have learning problems that need full day instruction from a specialized teacher. The classrooms usually have between eleven and thirteen students per classroom and usually service two grade levels. The District also has specialized Special Day Classes for students that have severe delays in their language development. The Severe Delay of Language Program serves students starting at three years of age. The District’s pre-school program offers a two-day a week program and a five day a week program for students that need more extensive services. The kindergarten through sixth grade program usually has twelve students per classroom with two instructional aides for additional support. Each school site has additional support services from psychologists, occupational therapists and nurses to meet the emotional and medical needs of the Special Education students in the Resource Specialist Program, the Special Day Classes and the Speech and Language Programs. All Special Education staff are also involved in interfacing with the regular school program to meet the needs of students prior to placement in Special Education. A critical aspect of working with the School site is the identification of students who are appropriate for Special Education services. There is also vision and hearing itinerant support for students who have specific needs, but remain in mainstreamed programs. Each Resource Specialist, Speech and Language Therapist and Special Day Class teacher has bilingual aide support throughout the day. Additional Special Education services are given to students through the Monterey County Office of Education. These services include, but are not limited to, educational programs for Special Education students with Autism, Mental Retardation, Orthopedically Handicapped, Vision Impairment, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Severe Delay of Language and Multiple Handicapped. The District also serves infants from birth to three years of age through the Monterey County Office of Education Infant Program. Many of these services are on campuses outside the Alisal Union School District boundaries, but two Severely Handicapped Classrooms and a fully included Severely Handicapped/ Orthopedically Handicapped Program are located on our own school campuses at Fremont and Creekside Elementary Schools.
